Amla
Indian gooseberry, or Amla, is a highly valued fruit in Ayurveda for its extensive health benefits and rich vitamin C content. It is known to balance the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) and is a key ingredient in traditional elixirs like Chyawanprash due to its ‘Vayasthapaka’ (anti-aging) properties. The fruit, along with the leaves, seeds, bark, and roots of the tree, are all considered useful and offer a source of “eternal youth” through their high antioxidant content.
Key Health Benefits and Uses
- Anti-aging and Antioxidants: Amla is rich in antioxidants that help reduce free radicals and increase the lifespan of body cells. Regular consumption helps address premature signs of aging on the face and improves overall vitality.
- Blood Sugar Management: The polyphenols in amla help keep blood sugar levels within limits and reduce the side effects of diabetes. Taking amla juice with turmeric is particularly effective for diabetes control.
- Heart Health: Amla helps protect the heart by reducing the production of “bad” (LDL) cholesterol, which can otherwise accumulate in coronary arteries and lead to heart attacks.
- Digestive Aid: Including amla in your diet can reduce acidity, ease digestion, and prevent gas formation in the stomach. Eating amla jam every morning helps keep the stomach clean.
- Urinary and Burning Sensations:
- For burning sensations in the palms, soles, or body, take amla juice with honey.
- For relief from burning sensations during urination and other urinary tract disorders, soak dried amla and coriander seeds in equal parts overnight, strain the water in the morning, and drink with rock sugar.
- Hair and Skin Care: Amla is useful for keeping hair black and managing dandruff. Regular consumption improves skin complexion and prevents skin-related diseases.
- Immunity and Vitality: As an excellent source of vitamin C, amla is an effective remedy for diseases like bleeding gums and nose. It removes physical and mental fatigue, increases enthusiasm, and strengthens gums and teeth.
- Cognitive Function: Regular consumption of amla is believed to increase intelligence, memory, and the functioning of sensory organs.
